“Keeps Gettin’ Better” is the first single by American singer Christina Aguilera released from her greatest hits album Keeps Gettin’ Better -- A Decade of Hits. The song peaked #7 on Billboard Hot 100, #4 on Canadian Hot 100 and #2 on Turkey Top 20 Chart.
Song Information & Critical response
In the song Aguilera refers herself as both a “super-girl” and a “super-bitch” and in an interview with MSN she said following “After having my own child, it’s pretty amazing what females are capable of. We’re Supergirl, we do it all: we give the love, we give the milk. On the other hand, I’m running a business. I’m running my career. That comes with being labeled a bitch. If that’s what I’m gonna be called by being assertive and knowing who I am and what I want out of life, then so be it. I will wear that label proudly. For me it’s about turning that word into a positive.”
Billboard Magazine wrote the following about the song, “While it wouldn’t make for an interesting album’s worth of material, Aguilera’s exciting performance of the song at MTV’s Video Music Awards shows an artist that knows when it’s time to change it up. Teamed again with the incomparable Linda Perry, “Better” should have no problem keeping company with Tina’s rich catalog of hits.”
Music editor Nick Levine from British entertainment and media website Digital Spy welcomed the single writing, “It isn’t one of Christina’s boldest singles, but it’s a welcome change from what she was up to on Back to Basics and will more than hold its own on her greatest hits album.”
Entertainment Weekly listed “Keeps Gettin’ Better” under “16 Fall Music Essentials”, saying, “Xtina isn’t quite ready to release a follow-up to’s 2006’s Back To Basics yet, but in the meantime, she’s keeping fans happy with this bouncy dance-pop anthem.” Sunday Times listed the song as one of the hottest downloads of the first November week.
Music video
Beginning with October 24, iLike started premiering behind-the-scenes teaser a day, which featured interviews with Christina Aguilera. The music video was released in iLike on October 27th.
Popjustice said, “The video, which was filmed by Peter Berg (Hancock) will feature Aguilera as Catwoman, but the video’s a riot of costume changes, makeovers, multiple ’scenarios’ and Christina even seems to look like she’s having fun”.
People reported, “I really enjoyed making the video. Being an artist who likes to play around with different looks, it was a lot of fun to portray various characters within the same shoot.”
The video was released to UK iTunes on October 30 only 4 days before its UK single release date.
Live performances
Its first television performance was at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards on September 7th, 2008. MTV.com wrote, following her performance the next day:
“Christina Aguilera, who was poured into a second-skin leather catsuit accessorized with silver armbands, a black-leather cat mask, black gauzy cape and platinum-blond hair. Standing in a tower of neon-lit boxes, Christina gave a taste of the future-shock version of her first hit, “Genie in a Bottle,” before slinking over to a glowing set to perform her new Goldfrapp-like techno dance tune “Keep Getting’ Better.”
Christina Aguilera has also been performing her single Keeps Gettin’ Better with other past singles in the United Arab Emirates, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.
In the American Music Awards 2008, she made a musical medley of 6 of her greatest hits including Keeps Gettin’ Better.

The song has performed well on the Canadian Hot 100 chart: It first debuted at #16, and a week later the song became the “Greatest Airplay, Sales Gainer” moving up and peaking #4. However, the track only spent one week within the top ten.
On September 30, the song was released on the American iTunes Store where it reached #7 in a matter of hours and peaked at #2 on iTunes Top 100 songs. “Keeps Gettin’ Better” is currently at number 11 of the most played songs in American Pop radios. In the U.S the song debuted at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 on the issue date October 18, 2008 as the “Hot Shot” of the week. In it’s second week, the song falls down to #17. This has become Aguilera’s highest debut on the Hot 100 and her highest peak since “Ain’t No Other Man” in 2006. After being digitally released on September 30, 2008, “Keeps Gettin’ Better” sold 143,895 legal downloads in its first week, enough for a #3 debut on the Hot Digital Tracks and #5 on Hot Digital Songs.
In the UK, “Keeps Getting Better” has been added to the C-List of BBC’s Radio 1 Playlist. Despite receiving hardly any airplay from Radio 1 and being released only digitally, the song managed a top 20 chart debut in the UK at number 14.
