“Miles Away” is the third single by American singer Madonna from her eleventh studio album, Hard Candy. It was first released as a promotional single in Japan in June 2008, due to it being the theme for the Fuji TV Japanese drama Change. The song was officially released on October 17, 2008 by Warner Bros. Records. The song was the last number-one dance airplay hit of 2008 and first one of 2009.

Background

The music for “Miles Away” was written first among all the other songs of Hard Candy, and Madonna began singing for the song after listening to it. Madonna said that the song was inspired by her (then) husband, Guy Ritchie. “You realize so many people have to deal with long distance relationships. It’s not easy. You have to work hard to make it work.” When asked if the song was autobiographical, she said:
“ Probably in many respects most of the songs [on Hard Candy] are [autobiographical]. But in more of an unconscious way. I don’t really think about telling personal stories when I’m writing music. It just comes. And then a lot of times, six months later, eight months later, I go, “Oh, that’s what I wrote that song about.” But that’s when I play the song for lots of people and they all go, “Oh, I can totally relate to that.” In “Miles Away” I’m tapping into the global consciousness of people who have intimacy problems. ”

The cover depicts passport stamps of her European dates from the 2008 Sticky & Sweet Tour. The song has been performed in both the Sticky & Sweet Tour as well as the Hard Candy Promo Tour.

Chart performance

The single was released on the European iTunes Stores on October 17, 2008.

“Miles Away” debuted at number 90 on the Canadian Hot 100. The next week it dropped out of the chart, but then made a re-entry peaking higher at #83 and then climbing up to the top forty peaking at #23. The song was released in Japan as the second promotional single from Hard Candy (following “4 Minutes”). In addition, it has sold over 500.000 song ringtones (2P) in Japan. The song debuted at number 39 in the Dutch Top 40,[9] and has peaked at #10 so far. In the Turkish Billboard Chart, the song debuted at position number 14, and peaked at #2 so far.

“Miles Away” has reached number 1 on the official German Airplay Chart in just five weeks and reached a peak of 11 on the official German Media Control Charts.

With no physical release, and only the album version available digitally, “Miles Away” is Madonna’s lowest performing single in Australia, not entering the official chart.

On November 30, 2008, the song entered the UK Singles Chart at #39 selling 5,643 copies, it dropped to #68 the following week and then dropped off, for two weeks total on the chart. This makes “Miles Away” Madonna’s first single to miss the Top 10 in the U.K. since “Love Profusion” in 2003 (#11) and her lowest chart position since the 1984 release of “Borderline” which reached #56 (the song was re-released and reached #2 in 1986).

“Miles Away” has started charting on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart and currently sits at 5 and has peaked at #1 on the Hot Dance Single Sales and Hot Singles Sales charts in its January 3, 2009 issue. It also debuted at #15 on the Hot Dance Airplay chart, moved up to 10 the following week, and reaching number one in its December 27, 2008 issue. This feat gave Madonna her seventh consectutive number one single on the Hot Dance Aiplay chart and is so far the only artist to accomplish this feat. Madonna is the artist with the most Dance Airplay hits on this chart. On the issue dated December 20, “Miles Away” debuted and peaked at #99 on the Pop 100 chart and dropped off the chart the following week. “Miles Away” has not charted on the U.S. Hot 100, due to lack of airplay.
